Marie Smith

June 28, 2009

This year I set out as one of my goals to surround myself with supportive, creative, like-minded people on my quest to fully live my life as a writer. I wasn't sure how I was going to accomplish this as I live in a remote part of the interior of BC.

Then I heard about something called Twitter and to my delight I now converse with writers from all over the world. I am supported and encouraged by them in #writegoal and chat with them in #writechat every Sunday.

There is one Tweet that has touched me to the core of my being. Her profile name is Cellobard, her given name is Marie Smith. I am compelled to share her story and what better way than to post her link to her YouTube video and her website.

If you want to be inspired and humbled in the presence of someone who truly understands the gift of this experience we call life then please take a few minutes to hear her music and words.

My Writing Studio

June 12, 2009

For this post, I wanted to share with you where I do the majority of my writing. This location was chosen out of necessity. Necessity, because I share my 923 sq. foot home with my older sister, three rambunctious cats and a very vocal cockatiel.

Like most writers, I need a certain amount of quiet and calm to get into a writing groove for sustained periods of time. My sister gets that and makes every attempt to give me my space and solitude. Not so with the cats. Working uninterrupted is an impossibility when three tabbies are vying for my lap, nudging my arm seeking a scratch between the ears or stepping across my keyboard.

I think Frankie, my orange tabby fancies himself a writer but most of the pages he comes up with looks like this: sla;kjs ‘dfl;tiperodds asdlkfsjf. I don't have the heart to tell him he really should stick to his day job of catching mice.

The cockatiel likes to sing to the squirrels and the squirrels apparently like to answer back. The bird's vocal repertoire is mostly limited to earsplitting squawks and shrill repetitive notes. Even with earplugs, I can still hear him.

In frustration, I packed up my battered leather satchel with my laptop, pencils and pads and headed outdoors. Turns out, my pink, Adirondack chair under the cedar tree has become my writing space of choice.

I wish my blog was equipped with smell-o-vision so you could understand how amazing cedar needles, moss covered earth and sunshine smell like.

When it rains, I long to go to my outside writing studio but have to make do with barricading myself in my bedroom with the fan on for white noise. It's no surprise that I do most of my writing in the summer and leave the revisions and edits for the colder months when I'm cooped up inside.

I dream of one day having a bricks & mortar studio just a stone's throw away from my house. The interior would be all white and the floors a dark chocolate brown. There would be big windows on all four walls to let in the light and the spectacular views. I would furnish it with an old desk, a comfortable chair and a coffee maker.

One day, I know this will be realized.

But in the meantime, I'm blessed to have an amazing outdoor space to dream, create and vision my stories to life and like all writers it doesn't really matter where I do my writing as long as I can write.

August 16, 2008

My sincerest thanks to everyone at the Lilley Press family for making my dream of becoming a published author a reality.

Special thanks to Jeff Johnston, publisher, for taking a chance on a newbie writer, to Domynoe, the Divine Goddess of Editors, for making the whole process a joy, and to Sarah, in marketing, for her creative genius.

Extra special thank you's to Tanya (for staying up until 2:30 am) and Lisa for joining me in the chat room yesterday. To Cari for supplying the champagne and being there for each round of edits. To Jennifer Chipperfield for posting my book on her blog and telling all her friends. And to Susan Dempsey for spreading the word.
